Robert Alan Goldberg MD FACS was born in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from Stanford University in 1979 with a major in Psychology, and completed his MD degree at UCLA School of Medicine in 1983. His Residency in Ophthalmology was at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA, under Bradley R. Straatsma MD, finishing in 1987. He was a Fellow in Orbital and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery under Norman Shorr, MD at the Jules Stein Eye Institute. A rotating second year fellowship in Orbital Oncology included time with Jack Rootman MD, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and with John Wright MD at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, England.
Following completion of fellowship training, Dr. Goldberg accepted a faculty position at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. In 1991 he became Chief of the Orbital and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Division, and in 1998 he became a full Professor and is currently the Karen and Frank Dabby Professor of Ophthalmology. He has a significant focus on education: he is the Director of the Fellowship in Orbital and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery, and has trained more than 50 Domestic and International Fellows. He also participates in resident education, chairing the Residency Selection Committee. His research interests include surgical and medical treatments for Thyroid Related Orbitopathy, small incision approaches to orbital and oculofacial surgery, dacryocystorhinostomy, and orbital imaging.
He serves on the editorial boards of Archives of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, and on the executive boards of the ASOPRS and the California Association of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He is a section editor for Oculoplastics and Orbit for the AAO’s ONE website. He has published 160 papers and chapters and has lectured nationally and internationally. He has developed a number of surgical techniques for orbital and periorbital reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. His academic practice draws national and international referral patients with complicated orbital and oculoplastic problems. Awards include the AAO Senior Honor Award, and the Lester Jones Anatomy Award from the ASOPRS.
Dr. Goldberg is married to Jan Takasugi MD, his medical school classmate and Chief of Surgery at the Kaiser West Los Angeles Hospital in Los Angeles. They have 2 children: Kevin, a senior at University of California Santa Cruz, studying Astrophysics, and Gina, a freshman at Hamilton College with aspirations for a career in medicine. Hobbies include piano, running, golf, electronics including cameras and computers, and drawing.
Dr. Michael Groth is a renowned expert in aesthetic eyelid surgery and has practiced in Beverly Hills for 25 years. He completed his residency and fellowship at UCLA’s prestigious Jules Stein Eye Institute. He trained under renowned surgeon Dr. Henry I Baylis. As an Associate Clinical Professor at UCLA, Dr. Groth teaches regularly and has lectured extensively. He has authored many articles and book chapters on Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery. Dr. Guy Massry was born in Israel and raised in Los Angeles, California. He received his undergraduate and medical degree at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, and then his ophthalmology and ophthalmic plastic training in St. Louis, MO and New York City, before returning to Beverly Hills, California where he has been in full time practice for the last 15 years. Dr. Massry’s practice focuses on aesthetic forehead, eyebrow, eyelid and mid face surgery. He has a specific interest in revisional aesthetic procedures, volume preservation blepharoplasty, and advances in the use of eyelid and periorbital fillers. Dr. Massry is a fellowship co-preceptor for an AAFPRS approved facial plastic surgery fellowship which is currently training its sixth fellow. Dr. Massry has published extensively, is a frequent guest lecturer at various symposia both nationally and internationally, and has edited three textbooks focusing on aesthetic ocluloplastic surgery. The most recent text titled “Master Techniques in Blepharoplasty and Periorbital Rejuvenation” has been well received and is the first such text which is truly multi-disciplinary in nature with contributions from the four core aesthetic subspecialties (plastic surgery, facial plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery and dermatology). Dr. Massry is also a reviewer for various scientific journals and sits on the editorial board (while serving as section editor of aesthetic citations), for his society’s specialty journal: The Journal of Ophthalmic Plastic and reconstructive Surgery (OPRS).
Dr Mendelson is in private practice at The Centre for Facial Plastic Surgery in Melbourne Australia. He graduated from Monash University Medical School, Melbourne, and Interned at the Alfred Hospital Melbourne. He trained in general surgery and plastic surgery at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota USA for six years and is certified by the American Board of Surgery and The American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr Mendelson is known for his contributions on the surgical anatomy of the face. His several important anatomical findings are published in a series of classic papers, on the Surgical Anatomy of the Temple, the retaining ligaments of the orbit and Prezygomatic Space, the Surgical Anatomy of the Mid Cheek as well as the Surgical Anatomy of the Premasseter space and the Jowl.
